Coherix Launches In-line Robust 3D Bead Verification
Ann Arbor, Michigan, May 19, 2016 — Coherix, Inc., a global leader in 3 Dimensional (3D) Machine Vision, today announced the official release of Predator3D™.
Auto and aircraft makers are using an increasing amount of Structural Adhesives to join parts made of different materials, for example, steel, aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber, etc. These adhesives also reduce cost and weight, while improving quality and safety. Coherix developed Predator3D to verify the proper volume is dispensed, and the bead is in the correct location.
Predator3D is an advanced bead inspection system used to monitor and control the dispensing of structural adhesives and sealants used in automotive, industrial vehicle, and aircraft body structures. It is designed to simultaneously monitor the sealant dispensing process, eliminating the traditional need for additional cycle time to complete a post dispense inspection. The Predator3D captures the actual 3D data, including bead size, shape, volume, and location, and then based on easily defined user criteria, the system reports failures as they are detected.
Predator3D separates itself from its temperamental 2D vision camera predecessors, because the Predator3D does not depend on the color contrast between adhesive and part for robust operation, and is not affected by changes in ambient lighting, even when a black bead is placed on a black part, where 2D techniques fail.
Prior to the official launch, 18 units of Predator3D were in operation at two major Tier 1 Automotive suppliers, and proved to be reliable and rugged in the manufacturing process.
“Industry is finally getting the reliability they need with Coherix Robust3D™ solutions. The difficult auto error-proofing problems we are solving today are decades old. Previously they could not be solved; however, today with Coherix Robust3D products, they can.” said Dwight Carlson, CEO and Chairman of Coherix.
